I have no reason to think that anyone reading this wouldn’t know where I’m located…  But it’s the big scary city of Indianapolis otherwise known as Indy thanks to the popularity of the Indy 500 over the past 99 years.

I jest on the big and scary.  It’s not that big, and not that scary…  but a lot around here seem to think it is.

Anyway, what’s going on with this post?  I’m just putting it down that I’m sick of people using the word Indy when they mean indie.  You know…  It should be indie-rock or indie-films…  But some people just get lazy or are that stupid to know that Indy is a city and not short for independent.

Three quick examples from a Google search of “Indy” (in the order I found them).

  • INDYMOGUL.com – “a network dedicated to filmmakers and film fans alike…”  I’m really impressed that when I go and visit this site, their “indie” credentials include a feature review of the film Furry Vengeance.
  • INDYWORLD.com – “Publisher of cool comic books & graphic novels.”  I’ll give them indie, but there’s nothing Indy about them.
  • INDYMUSIC.com – Seems dormant, and not sure what this is supposed to accomplish, but the email address is “IndieMusic@indyMusic.com” – looks like an identity crisis to boot.

In fact, I find it kind of laughable in that the term “indie” is usually associated with some kind of art form striving to identify itself as less mainstream and more unique and original.  Indianapolis not only has little to none in the way of good public art, it also has little in the way of “indie” organizations and activities that are more than a room partially-full of hipsters representing themselves as the arts scene of a city.
