Photography has been a part of my life to varying degrees for more than the last 21 years. For most of that, I’ve been a devotee to Nikon and their products.
That’s probably about the change.
I’ve hinted at it on Twitter and such, but I took a tentative step in picking up a Canon EOS T2i. Along with the packaged kit lens, I’ve also got a 50mm lens and a couple of other little things so I can run it through some paces to see if I want to continue down this path.
What’s the impetus of all this? Two main things. I’ve got two Nikon DSLR bodies, and both are from the pre-CMOS days. The images are noisy not as much dynamic range as I’d like. The big reason is the inclusion of video in DSLR’s, and the obvious fact that Nikon is really lagging behind. Not a single Nikon camera offers 30 frames per second (fps), and very few offer 1080p resolution. The T2i offers 1080p at 30fps at a compellingly low price.
I’ve waited over a year for Nikon to catch up, every new model that touts it’s video capability only steps up with a maximum of 25 fps. What’s the big deal with that difference? A standard and flexibility. 30 fps is what Television is broadcast at here in the US.
That’s not to say that I’m going to be shooting for TV, but having a higher baseline standard gives you the flexibility to step down if need be. It’s a lot easier to step down in quality than squeezing quality out of a format of lesser standards.
Anyway, I’m waiting for the package to arrive as we speak. I think there may be a few posts on this topic as I’m going through the process / decision.
