So in reading some news, apparently a rare, giant manta ray was born at a Japanese aquarium. This is also supposedly the only instance of a manta ray ever breeding in captivity. According to the Reuters article republished on CNN:
"My heart was heavy at first because I thought it had been still-born, but we were so relieved when she finally started swimming around," the aquarium's manta ray breeder, Minoru Toda, said in a telephone interview.
So let me get this straight. Never once has one bred in captivity, yet there are still professional specialists that concentrate on the breeding of a species with no track record of reproducing in captivity?
Makes me want to become a unicorn breeder. It'd probably pay better and have less expectations of success.
